Blepharitis is a common condition that leads to inflammation of the eyelids, specifically the lid margins where the lashes are attached. There are a few different types of blepharitis, but they all cause overall irritation of the lids and can lead to a feeling of dryness or itching. One type of blepharitis, Seborrheic, is often part of an overall skin condition called seborrhea. This may also affect the scalp, chest, back and the area behind the ears. The second form of blepharitis - Staph Blepharitis - is a more common condition, caused by Staphylococcal bacteria on the lids. Either type of blepharitis may lead to another lid condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. This is also common and can make using contact lenses and computers more difficult due to evaporation of the tear film. All types of blepharitis tend to be chronic conditions that require specific and dedicated treatments to manage effectively.
Causes
Some people are just more prone to blepharitis than others. Hormones, nutrition, general physical condition, and even stress may contribute to seborrheic blepharitis. Build-ups of naturally occurring bacteria contribute to staph blepharitis. Both types can also be affected by environmental conditions.
Symptoms
Blepharitis ofter causes redness of the eyelids, flaking and scaling of the eyelashes, whitening of the lashes, lash loss and red, irritated eyes. In more serious cases, it can lead to lid scarring and notching and misdirected lashes that can poke the front of the eye.
Treatment
Treatment for blepharitis largely depends upon the type seen. However, there are a few treatment options that benefit every type of blepharitis. Eyelid scrubs with a specially formulated cleaner can reduce the symptoms of blepharitis. Application of warm compresses to the eyes daily is also effective. More stubborn cases occasionally require the addition of antibiotic ointment, or oral medications. Artificial tears are often helpful to temporarily relieve the discomfort or dryness associated with this condition.
