More people lose vision due to diabetes than any other condition. Diabetes really represents an inability of the body to move sugar from the blood to the tissues of the body. When tissues do not get enough sugar, they send out send out a sort of "help" signal to the body. The normal response is for the body to grow blod vessels to help get more blood to the tissues. In the eye, these vessels are fragile and leak. This leads to swelling of the nerve layer, poor circulation and ruptures. All of these changes eventually can lead to blurred vision loss.
Symptoms
Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy include:
- Blurred or darkened vision
- Sudden loss of vision
It is important to note that vision changes are typically the only symptoms, with no pain.
Risk Factors & Treatment
It is critical for all diabetic patients to have a thorough eye health examination at least every year. The best way to prevent vision loss is to treat diabetic retinopathy before you notice any visual changes. When diabetic retinopathy is diagnosed and treated early you can greatly decrease the liklihood of a permanent decrease to you vision.
Diabetes also increases the risk of developing cataracts and glaucoma. Throughout the rest of the body, diabetes can increase cause many other complications affecting the heart, kidneys and extremities. From a day-to-day basis, the best thing you can do is control your blood sugar and blood pressure.
Sometimes, even with the best control of blood sugar, sudden vision changes can occur. If this happens, it is very important to call our office at once.
